Super Mario Bros made out of leopard wood, maple, walnut and red oak. 170 total pixels, each 1" x 1" with a 45 degree bevel on all 4 edges to add depth and attention to every piece. Mounted on red oak plywood and framed with walnut. Finished with a blend of boiled linseed oil and polyurethane. This was my first piece I ever sold at a local handmade craft show. I believe it sold for $350 and to be honest I was hoping it wouldn't sell so I could keep it for myself. The bevels on each piece was made by setting the table of my disc sander to 45 degrees and sanding the edges down. A tedious process that was not very enjoyable but well worth it.
Here are all 170 pieces loosely laid out on my workbench.
Because I'm sort of nerdy, I hacked my Nintendo WIi and have every single NES game loaded on an SD card that I can play through an emulator. I fired up Super Mario Bros, jumped, paused and took this photo with my phone.
Next I sketched up Mario in Adobe Illustrator by counting pixies from the cell phone photo.
Stephen P. sent me this photo of my Super Mario hanging on the wall in his new home. Stephen bought the wooden pixel Mario off of me at the last Maker's Mart in Toledo last April. Thanks again Stephen!
